Bharat stage 6 (BS-VI) is the new pollution emission control norm implemented by the Indian Government. New pollution norms help in reducing pollution from automobiles. New Automobiles have to follow the new BS -6 (BS-VI) emission standards from 1 April 2020 and This will lead to discontinuing the sale and manufacturing of BS-IV complying vehicles.BS -6 Emission standard is Based on the Euro-6 i.e European emission standard.
Pollution is increasing drastically in India and air pollution by vehicle is approx 30% of the total. It is necessary to take some serious steps to reduce this emission so the Indian government skipped BS 5 and directly implemented BS -6 Norms. About 66 % of pollution-related death is due to the pollutants emitted from diesel engines. Pollutants like carbon dioxide (C02), Carbon monoxide (CO), Hydrocarbons, Particulate matter (PM), Oxides of nitrogen (NOX), Oxides of sulfur (SOX), etc.
What are the changes that BS-6 will Bring.
- It will reduce the emission of NOX by 25% in petrol engines and 68% in the Diesel engine.
- Reduction in emission of CO By 60-80%.
- The emission of hydrocarbons decreased by 80%.
- A major change in the Petrol engine is the use of electronic fuel injection (EFI) in place of Carburetor, improving the combustion of fuel, etc.
- Clean fuel with a high octane number is used in the BS -6 engine.
- Introduction of new BS -6 Fuel having high octane number for petrol engines and high cetane number for Diesel engine, for better and improved combustion.
- In Diesel Engine, Introduction of new devices like Diesel particulate filter (DPF), Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) to reduce the pollution emission.
- BS -6 Will lead to an increase in the cost of petrol vehicles by 10,000 to 50,000 approx. and the cost of diesel vehicles by 100,000 to 150,000 (INR).
- Automobile companies have to change their production setup due to changes in the design of engines and vehicles.
- As a modification of diesel engine is difficult and become costly So, many companies reduce the production of diesel variant of vehicles.
- The fuel efficiency of vehicles will be slightly reduced.
